Anxiety and Your Faith

Navigating anxiety through a faith-centered lens.

Understanding Anxiety

Anxiety can feel overwhelming, but it's important to recognize that you’re not alone. Many women in their 20s and 30s experience anxiety, often stemming from various pressures in life—be it career, relationships, or societal expectations. The Bible tells us in Philippians 4:6-7 (NIV), "Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God." This verse reminds us that we can bring our worries to God, who cares deeply for us.

Faith as a Resource

Your faith can serve as a powerful tool in managing anxiety. Research consistently indicates a significant, though nuanced, correlation between faith and reduced anxiety in adults. A systematic review of 32 studies showed that prayer, worship, and spiritual practices are associated with reduced anxiety — both in general populations and clinical patients.* In 1 Peter 5:7 (ESV) we are encouraged to "cast all your anxieties on him, because he cares for you." When you surrender your fears to God, you create space for peace and hope. Consider how prayer, scripture reading, and community support can strengthen your faith during anxious times. Engaging with your church or a small group can foster a sense of belonging and encouragement.

Practical Steps Forward

Integrating practical steps can further help you navigate anxiety:

  • Mindfulness and Prayer: Set aside time each day for mindfulness practices combined with prayer. This can help ground you in the present moment.

  • Healthy Lifestyle Choices: Focus on nourishing your body with balanced meals consisting of whole foods, regular movement, and adequate sleep. These are both faithful and foundational steps to supporting our overall health.

  • Seek Support: Don’t hesitate to reach out for support from a qualified professional. If you think we’d be a good fit, schedule a consult and we can discuss whether counseling or coaching makes the most sense for you!
