The Power of Nervous System Regulation
Discover techniques for regulating your nervous system to manage anxiety.
What is Nervous System Regulation?
Nervous system regulation refers to the ability to maintain balance within your body's stress response system. It’s a different mechanism but similar in concept to our body’s ability to regulate temperature — when you’re too hot, your body sweats to cool you down, and when you’re cold, your body shivers to create heat energy. Once you’ve cooled down or are warm enough, your body goes back to its normal baseline state.
Our bodies were crafted to ebb and flow between different nervous system states to help us navigate the stress of the present moment we’re in. When our nervous system is well-regulated, we experience emotional resilience and can navigate life's challenges with grace — we return back to our stress baseline pretty well. In contrast, nervous system dysregulation can lead to anxiety, panic attacks, and overwhelming stress — leaving us stuck and struggling to return back to baseline.
Techniques to Help You Self-Regulate
Implementing effective techniques can empower you to find balance and peace. Here are some actionable strategies:
Deep Breathing: Practice deep, diaphragmatic breathing. Inhale through your nose for a count of four, hold for four, and exhale through your mouth for a count of six. This simple exercise activates your parasympathetic nervous system, promoting relaxation.
Grounding Exercises: Connect with your surroundings by engaging your senses. Notice five things you can see, four you can touch, three you can hear, two you can smell, and one you can taste. This technique draws your focus away from anxiety.
Physical Movement: Engage in regular physical activity. Whether it’s a brisk walk, yoga, or dancing, moving your body releases endorphins that can help alleviate stress and anxiety.
Prayer and Meditation: Incorporate moments of stillness and prayer into your day. Philippians 4:6-7 (ESV) encourages us to “not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God.” This practice can center your thoughts and calm your spirit.
